How I make a home feel calm, elegant and expensive
When people ask me what makes a home feel calm and expensive, my answer is always the same. It’s not about trends or copying what you see online. It’s about a few essential design choices made with intention.
In my work as a luxury interior designer, I focus on foundations before anything else. These are the elements that allow my clients to truly feel good in their space, every single day. No matter the size or style of the home, these principles stay the same.
1. Drapes on Every Window
The first thing I do in any project is add drapes to every window. This is non-negotiable in my work.
Drapes soften a room, control natural light and instantly make a space feel finished. They create visual continuity and bring warmth, even in modern interiors. Without them, a room often feels incomplete, no matter how beautiful the furniture is.
2. Layered Lighting That Adapts to Real Life
One ceiling light is never enough.
I design lighting in layers so a home can adapt to how you actually live. This means combining chandeliers or ceiling fixtures with floor lamps, table lamps, and task lighting.
Layered lighting creates comfort, and flexibility. It allows a room to feel energizing during the day and calming at night. This is one of the most overlooked elements in interior design, yet one of the most transformative.
3. Furniture That Is Both Beautiful and Comfortable
A home should support you, not fight you.
If furniture looks beautiful but is uncomfortable, you won’t use it. If it’s comfortable but uninspiring, it won’t elevate your space. I select furniture that does both, so you never have to choose between aesthetics and ease.
This balance is what allows a home to feel elegant while still being lived in.
4. Art That Is Personal, Not Generic
Art is not decoration. It is the emotional center of a home.
I help my clients choose artwork that reflects a part of who they are, rather than filling walls with generic pieces. Personal art brings meaning and identity to a space. It’s what turns a well-designed home into one that feels truly personal.
